When I first set foot on the rugged shores of Piha, New Zealand, I was instantly captivated. Nestled between the wild Tasman Sea and lush, green cliffs, Piha is often called a hidden gem on the West Coast of NZ. This charming little town quickly stole my heart, and before I knew it, I was calling it home for an entire year.

A Warm Welcome

From the moment I arrived in Piha, I was welcomed by friendly locals who made me feel as if I belonged. The first week I was staying in my car on the beach using the outside showers and facilities which are really ok! I met some local kids skimboarding on the beach and I showed them a few tricks. The next moment I was having diner with their family on the beachfront terrasse of their house. How nice are these kiwis?

Finding My Groove

Welcomed by the community, I quickly secured a job as a waiter at the surf club and as a barista at the Piha store. The local campground let me stay there and use their facilites for barely any money. Each morning, I crafted delicious Allpress espresso, paired with the town’s favorite steak pies that kept me running into my afterwork surf session.

My daily routine became simple yet satisfying: work, surf, and soak in Piha’s stunning scenery. The local surf breaks offered both challenge and thrill, and I soon formed a deep passion for riding waves. It was a lifestyle I had only dreamed of before finding myself here, and I eagerly embraced each moment.

Midweek Madness

The excitement in Piha extended beyond the surf. Every Wednesday, the local bowling club hosted a lively ping pong tournament that drew locals into friendly competition. With over a dozen participants sharing in the laughter and rivalries, it made for a memorable midweek escape. I found not just a break from my routine but a chance to bond through shared experiences. The spirit of Piha was evident in every match and cheer.

What I learned was that Piha’s charm resided not only in its waves but also in the unique experiences that brought people together.

Piha is a haven for those who love nature's raw beauty. From hidden surf spots to cascading waterfalls, exploration was never-ending. I spent many weekends hiking trails lined with stunning ferns, discovering secret coves, and simply reveling in the breathtaking landscapes that surrounded me.

Reflection on My Kiwi Dream

Looking back on my year in Piha, it became clear that my time there was about more than surfing and breathtaking views. It was about the incredible people I met, the friendships I forged, and the unforgettable adventures we shared. Piha taught me the true meaning of living the Kiwi dream—a life rich with laughter, exploration, and a close connection to nature.

If you’re pondering a trip to New Zealand's West Coast, make sure to carve out time for Piha. Whether you are a seasoned surfer, a nature enthusiast, or someone simply in search of adventure, Piha awaits you with open arms, ready to help you create memories that will last a lifetime.
